Weather and farmer stress are two of the major topics that will be addressed at this week’s South Dakota Farmers Union Convention which opens today in Aberdeen. President Doug Sombke says it was an unprecedented year for crop disasters and that added to the challenges of the tough farm economy.
He says Farmers Union members also want to see truthful and consistent labeling of all types of agricultural products to clear up confusion among consumers.
Sombke says they’ll be talking about the need to grow industrial hemp in South Dakota and the challenges facing that industry.
Sombke says they’ll elect delegates to attend the National Farmers Union convention next year in Savannah, Georgia and hold officer elections. Sombke is running for re-election unopposed and as is Vice President Wayne Soren.
