Some South Dakota farm groups are supporting Governor Dennis Daugaard’s legislation to extend the non-meandered water law through 2021. The state legislature reached a compromise on the issue during a special session last summer. Lorin Pankratz lobbies for the South Dakota Soybean Association and Pork Producers Council and says those groups believe the law should be given time to work.
He says the concerns of sportsman should be dealt with in a separate piece of legislation.
Pankratz says it’s important to allow sportsmen access to waters for hunting and fishing, but also to respect landowner’s rights.
The Governor’s legislation, Senate Bill 24 would sunset the non-meandered waters law in 2021 rather than in 2018.
