Opioid addiction has become almost an epidemic in parts of the country, and South Dakota law enforcement is warning of the possible dangers.

Dr. Steven Stack is President of the American Medical Association, and spoke to the South Dakota Medical Association Convention last week in Sioux Falls.
He says opioids initially were seen as an effective, safe painkiller…..

Stack says the drugs began to spread when they were prescribed for less serious conditions…..

Stack says it will take a coalition to get the misuse of the drugs under control….

Stack, an emergency room physician in Lexington Kentucky, says he has seen the dangers of opioid addiction first hand.
