USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has released a proposed rule to update biotechnology regulations. The Trump administration calls it a balanced approach that protects plant health while allowing agricultural innovation to thrive. South Dakota Corn Growers President Doug Noem is pleased to see the agency moving forward with a common-sense regulation.
For example, he says when given a choice consumers will select GMO or biotech products over the alternative because they’re more environmentally friendly.
USDA Undersecretary Greg Ibach says the rule gives farmers more choices in the field and consumers more choices at the grocery store. Noem says that’s always positive.
Ibach says this rule will enable APHIS to evaluate genetically engineered organisms for plant pest risk with greater precision than what the current rule allows.
