Eight Democrat Senators, including five from the East Coast, have introduced legislation to ban chlorpyrifos, the main ingredient used in Lorsban. Farmers have used the pesticide t for years to battle spider mites, corn root worm and soybean aphids. South Dakota Corn Growers President Troy Knecht says it wasn’t used as much when biotech crops first came on the scene, but now it’s making a comeback and is an important tool for farmers.

He says those Senators backing the legislation to ban chlorpyrifos don’t understand it’s value.

Knecht says what the Senators are proposing with their bill will bring unintended consequences and will end up hurting the environment rather than protecting it.

EPA administrator Scott Pruitt announced last spring the agency’s denial of a petition from environmental groups to ban the pesticide outright.
