Japanese officials are expressing frustration with Trump administration economic politics and vowing to strike deals with other trading partners. They also dislike Trump’s harsh rhetoric on trade and the U.S. withdrawal from the Trans Pacific Partnership. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Larry Stomprud says the President may just be posturing, but if the U.S. ends up without a trade deal with Japan, it will hurt the U.S. cattle industry.
He says what’s caused slow movement on bilateral trade discussions has been the slow confirmation of needed government and USDA officials.
Stomprud says with the U.S. cattle herd numbers picking up, export markets are becoming even more important, especially Japan.
Stomprud says other important markets include China, in addition to Canada and Mexico and that’s why a good conclusion to the NAFTA talks is imperative.
