The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association is looking into reports of truckers being fined and charged for exceeding hay height restrictions on trucks. The current law sets a maximum height for hay hauling at 14 feet, three inches. Executive Director Jodie Anderson says the problem was just brought to their attention but it is a concern.

Anderson says their goal is to work with the Department of Public Safety to find a workable solution.

Violating this law is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Plus, it is less economical for South Dakota truckers to haul just one tier of hay bales. That added cost will ultimately get passed to livestock producers.
