COOL retaliation, EPA’s regulatory overreach and the downturn in the cattle markets will be the top issues at the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association Convention this week in Pierre. President Todd Wilkinson says unless the Senate follows the House and repeals Country of Origin Labeling, the economic hit to the cattle industry will be severe and comes at the same time they’re already facing market pressure.
He says producers are also concerned about the outcome of the Waters of the U.S. rule as the regulation is battled in Congress and the courts.
Wilkinson says on a positive note they’re excited about the re-opening of the New Angus Beef LLC plant in Aberdeen and what it will mean for the state’s cattle producers.
He’s says they’ll also discuss their position on the updated Confined Animal Feedlot Regulations as a DENR hearing will be held December 16 in Pierre.
