The School Milk Nutrition Act of 2019 has been introduced in the U.S. House. The measure expands milk options for students and allows schools to offer low-fat, 1-percent flavored milk if it is consistent with the recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Western Iowa Dairy Alliance Executive Director Scott Schroeder says he’s hoping by offering students more choices they’ll drink more milk.
He says the option to consume low-fat milk with flavors like chocolate can increase milk consumption trends and support local dairy farmers.
Schroeder says when students consume more dairy products it improves their overall diet and health.
The legislation is being backed by the National Milk Producers Federation, the International Dairy Foods Association, National Farmers Union and American Farm Bureau Federation.
