Sarpy County Attorney Says Decisions on Death Penalty Need Facts

There has been a lot of controversy over the wording of the ballot measure that would retain or repeal the Nebraska Legislature’s decision to do away with the death penalty and replace it with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.  Sarpy County Attorney Lee Polikov says there is another issue that hasn’t been brought to light yet.  He says those who support the repeal believe that criminals will get life with no parole – that isn’t the case.

Polikov says there is nothing in the state’s constitution now that allows for life sentences without parole.

Polikov says this is a difficult decision and Nebraskans will have to consider many things in making their decision but they don’t need to be misled by quote “dishonest rhetoric”.  He says decisions need to be made on facts and not claims.
