Rural Affairs Group Opposing Packer Ownership Bill

The Center for Rural Affairs is opposing legislation that’s passed out of the State Senate Ag Committee that will allow packer ownership of swine. Rural Affairs Senior Associate for Ag and Conservation Policy Traci Bruckner says her group has several concerns with this measure including the further consolidation of agriculture squeezing out smaller operations.
Bruckner says those who support this measure are focusing on hog numbers instead of producer numbers.
Bruckner says the present law banning packer ownership has been working and there’s no good reason to change that now.
Bruckner says LB 176 will next be heard on the floor of the Unicameral but a date for that has yet to be set.
