Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts wants any biotech labeling proposal from ranking member Debbie Stabenow to be vetted by farm and food groups. He says they’ve had an unprecedented number of organizations that have weighed in on labeling and should be able to comment on the compromise language.
South Dakota Corn Growers President Keith Alverson agrees with Robert’s approach.
He says any compromise legislation should include the concerns of farm groups, but also consumers.
Alverson says Senators are up against the clock to pass a bill and get it signed as Vermont’s state law is less than two months away from going into effect. Plus, other states are considering their own laws. He says that would create massive confusion for consumers.
Roberts says he is still unclear what Stabenow is willing to agree with to set a national standard on biotech labeling.
