Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts says he’s not ready to introduce his biotech labeling legislation yet. Robert’s bill would be voluntary, but set a national standard and prevent states from mandating labeling of foods containing GMO ingredients. South Dakota Corn Grower’s President Keith Alverson is hoping Robert’s gets his legislation passed before Vermont’s biotech labeling mandate goes into effect.
Alverson says it’s critical to have a national standard in place so consumers aren’t confused by a patchwork of state laws or have to bear the high cost of labeling.
He says it’s also important a national measure get approved before it gets bogged down by election year politics.
Roberts wants to make his biotech labeling bill a bipartisan measure and plans to make it a chairman’s mark that can be amended.
