USDA’s Risk Management Agency has determined those insured under the Federal Crop Insurance program are eligible for help for crops injured by irrigation water lost during a tunnel collapse. That occurred last month in Nebraska and Wyoming and the Farm Bureau in both states made the request for assistance. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson is pleased with the decision as the total estimated economic damage from the collapse is $89 million dollars.

He says several groups worked hard to convince the RMA to come through with help for the Nebraska and Wyoming farmers.

Nelson says while crop insurance is helpful, it doesn’t make up for the total loss. It also points out the need going forward to be prepared for these types of events.

Crews are still working to clear debris and make the repairs to restore water to the irrigation canal that collapsed last month.
