A week-long environmental project will start this coming Saturday as volunteers from across the region pull tons of trash out of the Big Sioux River, between Sioux Falls and Sioux City. Lynette Seigley, with Project AWARE, which stands for A Watershed Awareness River Expedition, says volunteers will focus on 91 miles of the waterway between Iowa and South Dakota.
Volunteers for last year’s Project AWARE pulled more than 68-thousand pounds of trash from the Des Moines River in north-central Iowa. Salvaged junk ranged from tractor tires to refrigerators.
Seigley says most of the volunteers who will be helping make the project succeed have never been on that stretch of the river before.
This year’s effort runs from July 12th to the 19th,
Volunteers are offered free tent camping and a chance to learn about watersheds, water quality and other natural resource topics during nightly programs.
