The River Basin Natural Resource District Oversight Advisory Task Force of the South Dakota legislature held their first meeting earlier this month to begin the process of rewriting river basin boundaries.

Senator Jason Frerichs of Wilmot was the prime sponsor of the bill passed in this year’s legislative session, which changes drainage management to natural resource districts.

He says they authorized the LRC to begin the first steps in redrawing the maps…

Frerichs says they want to cooperate with local governments in the transition…

There are already multi county districts managing drainage areas. Frerichs says those will be merged into the new natural resource districts…

Former legislator Kim Vanneman of Ideal was elected Chair of the ongoing Task Force.
