Risk of Heat Stress Rises With Higher Temperatures

Heat stress conditions for livestock are expected to increase today and into the weekend. SDSU Extension Veterinarian, Dr. Russ Daly says the most important thing producers need to do is keep up with the weather conditions.

Daly says producers should make sure their animals have enough water.

He recommends that feeding be done late in the afternoon or early in the evening.  Transporting animals should be delayed until conditions are cooler, too.

Daly says cattle most susceptible to heat stress are those in the feedlot on dark soil. He says some producers have been proactive and have already installed sprinkler systems to keep the animals cooler.
