A bill aimed at further protecting farmers’ rights is moving forward in the Nebraska legislature.

Under LB 227 significant changes to an operation, like an increase in size, change of farm type, or change in ownership would be protected against nuisance lawsuits from unhappy neighbors.

During debate, Senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha was adamant that big farming corporations are behind the bill..

Senator Dan Hughes of Venago, the sponsor added an amendment, allowing a two-year window to file a lawsuit, but after several questions from opposing Senators, admitted the bill needs more work..

The bill may come back for more debate next week.
