South Dakota Representative Kristi Noem is concerned about the negative impact retaliatory tariffs from Canada, Mexico and the European Union are having on agriculture. The three countries have announced duties on agricultural goods in response to the Trump administration lifting exemptions on tariffs of steel and aluminum imports from the trading partners.
Among the retaliation, the biggest blow comes from Mexico. They’re imposing a 10-percent duty on U.S. pork legs and shoulders to go into effect today and ramp up to 20-percent on July 5.
Noem is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has oversight on trade. She isn’t calling this a trade war just yet and isn’t concerned the tariffs will derail the NAFTA re-negotiations.
She says her committee is also monitoring the trade negotiations in China, which did not reach a resolution over the weekend.
Noem says she has talked to the President about how devastating the tariff battle is to agriculture.
