Regulatory issues will top the agenda of national policy priorities for the National Farmers Union at their Fall Legislative Fly-in next week in Washington D.C. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says they’ll be working a solution to avoid retaliation from Canada and Mexico on Country of Origin Labeling after the law was declared trade distorting by the WTO. However, he says the state organization differs from the national regarding a voluntary program.
Sombke says they’ll also be talking to EPA about their proposed Renewable Fuels Standard volumes. He is unsure where EPA will land with levels in the final rule, but is not optimistic about a favorable outcome.
He says the final policy priority will be pressuring EPA to either pull their Waters of the U.S. Rule or start over with stakeholder input. The fly-in runs September 15-18 and NFU will host more than 270 members in Washington, D.C.
