Construction is making progress on the $45 million expansion of Smithfield Foods in Sioux Falls and that has pork producers in the region excited about the future of their industry. South Dakota Pork Producers Council First Vice President Craig Andersen says they’re encouraged by the investment in a state-of-the-art hog barn, bacon slicing machine and ground pork spicer.

He says the construction signals growth and opportunity for the pork industry in the state and region.

Andersen says it also shows that Smithfield Foods believes the export market will continue to grow for pork.

The expansion is being done in three phases and will be a big shot in the arm for the Sioux Falls economy.
