Nebraska cattle producers are still in recovery mode after a tough winter and devastating flooding this spring. Shane Koczor with Bassett Livestock Auction says they are still trying to get a handle on the total number of cattle lost in the storms.
He says they’ve seen lighter runs and lighter calves and cows coming to market at Bassett Livestock. Some cattle producers have even decided to liquidate herds and there have been more sales of dry cows that lost calves and they are in poor condition.
He says it will take months, if not years for the Nebraska cattle industry and the whole state to recover.
Koczor says with all the moisture the grass and hay conditions are excellent, but it has been difficult to graze or harvest the crop as some of the meadows are water logged.
