Record soybean producer Randy Dowdy of Georgia shared his advice with farmers on how they can achieve higher yields on their own farms. Speaking at the Ag Outlook meeting Dowdy talked about his “ah-hah” moment and how he finally hit that record 171 bushel per acre yield on his farm.
He says farmers can’t push the crop if they don’t have good data. So, he recommends regular soil sampling and tissue sampling so they can determine how much of each nutrient the crop needs.
And Dowdy says the biggest mistake farmers make it cutting back on essential inputs during times of tight margins and lower prices.
Dowdy fully believes that farmers in the region can easily beat his record soybean yield if they control their controllables. He says with the longer days and the better soils, it should actually be easier for producers in this area to achieve 200 bushels soybeans.
