Proposed Legislation to make it easier to sell and consume raw milk is expected to be up before the South Dakota Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Friday. Senator Phil Jensen of Rapid City is the main sponsor with State Representative Jacky Sly carrying the bill in the House. Sly also of Rapid City says the aim of the bill is to ease the regulations currently saddled on small milk producers who wish to sell raw milk.
Sly says she’s confident raw milk is safe for human consumption.
She says under the bill which originates in the Senate, testing would still be required of raw milk although it wouldn’t necessarily have to go through the state agriculture department for that. Sly says it could be done by a private lab.
