Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton is proposing Railroads pay for a safety upgrade tax that would amount to $ 100,000 annually. Minnesota Corn Growers President Bruce Peterson of Northfield says that’s a concern because it could be passed down to ag shippers.
Peterson also is a little concerned about a proposed increase in insurance rates by the federal department of transportation that could hit truckers.
Governor Dayton wants the four railroads that serve the state to pay for safety improvements mostly at crossings.
