Sturgis Police and the Meade County School District are investigating an incident where a car was painted with racial slurs and then destroyed during Sturgis Homecoming Week celebrations. Pete Wilson, principal of Sturgis Brown High School says there is no connection between the activity called a car bash and the school……
Social media posts of the incident on Wednesday alerted Meade School District personnel as well as officials with the South Dakota High School Activities Association of the incident. Pictures of a car with “go back to the rez,” and racial profanity accompanying the image appear to be aimed at the Pine Ridge Thorpes football team (and their supporters) who were scheduled to play against the Sturgis Scoopers tonight.
Wilson says the incident is being taken seriously……
The Meade School District Board has issued a public apology….
Wilson says administrators have been in contact with school officials in Pine Ridge. The school board also decided to cancel all homecoming activities, and forfeit the football game to Pine Ridge.
