The populations of several animals in Iowa have all been up this year in Department of Natural Resources surveys. Wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says that includes rabbits.

Bogenschutz says the number of cottontail hunters has been declining, and there were around 24-thousand last season. The populations are best in the southern third and east central areas of the state. The new season began September 1st and Bogenschutz says most hunters are taking the animals to eat.

The D-N-R says cottontail hunting does not require a significant investment or high-tech equipment — as you simply need a shotgun. Bogenschutz says the good population of cottontails should make it a good year for new hunters or those with less experience to gain some skills. The cottontail season runs through February 28th.
