The Senate is expected to take up the 2018 farm bill on Friday. R-CALF is supporting some amendments to improve market transparency and help make markets more competitive. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says they’re backing a checkoff reform amendment called the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming Act that would prohibit checkoff monies from flowing to lobbying or self interest type groups.
He says they also want Senators to add a provision that would help promote USA beef.
Bullard says the other amendments they’re supporting calls for making cattle sales more transparent and keeping packers from retaliating against producers.
Bullard says they’re trying to get more information to producers so the packer doesn’t have sole control of the data about the actual value of the animals being sold.
