A coalition of agricultural groups have written to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer advocating that the U.S. remain in the World Trade Organization in order to achieve trade benefits. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says his group doesn’t think the U.S. is benefitting from being in the WTO, that contrary to the coalitions stance is finding itself on the short end of the stick when it comes to trade.
He says the U.S. can resolve their own world trade disputes by doing so with their own bilateral agreements on a country by country basis. Bullard says the U.S needs to withdraw from the WTO.
The ag coalition in their letter told the USTR that the WTO is fundamental to having a rules-based system of international trade. Bullard says the trade resolution process can be adjusted when countries work with each other individually on disputes.
Bullard says if the U.S. chooses not to leave the WTO, they should at least push for needed reforms.
