Two measures are pending in Congress, one in the Senate, one in the House to permanently ban horse slaughter facilities. The two pieces of legislation also call for ending of interstate or foreign sales of horses for human consumption. R CALF CEO Bill Bullard says his group is concerned about the measures. He says there is no solution as to what to do with unwanted or unused horses if these bills pass.
Bullard says getting rid of horses by just euthanizing them is not a viable solution. He says it’s not only costly but can create environmental problems.
Bullard says horse owners and all producers need to weigh in on these bills with members of Congress and tell them there needs to be a humane way of disposing of unwanted horses.
