It appears as if the United States has lost its case over Country of Origin Labeling at the World Trade Organization. Canada and Mexico opposed the new U.S. labeling law saying it hurts their competitiveness. The ruling is expected to be made public in late September or early October. R CALF CEO Bill Bullard says he’s not surprised by the ruling.
Bullard says the U.S. lost the COOL case because of steps taken by the meat packers to discount cattle.
Bullard says the next step will be for this WTO decision to be appealed which will take another year before there’s a final decision.
