Senator Elizabeth Warren has succeeded in delaying the nomination of Makan Delrahim, President Trump’s choice to lead the antitrust division of the U.S. Justice Department until September. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says whoever heads up that division needs to make sure antitrust laws are properly enforced to ensure the competitiveness of the livestock industry.
He says it’s critical that whoever is in charge of the antitrust division make sure they use all the tools available to them including the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Clayton Act and the Packers and Stockyards Act in order to protect livestock producers.
Bullard says the biggest antitrust problem facing the cattle industry is the need to investigate the practices of the big four meatpackers.
Bullard says the investigation is needed to make sure that the packers aren’t depressing cattle prices and the DOJ Antitrust Chief needs to take the central role in looking into that.
