Canada and the European Union are ironing out their own bilateral trade agreement. In the meantime the E.U. is continuing to negotiate the Trans Atlantic Trade Investment Partnership Act or TTIP. The EU’s ambassador to Canada wants to see a version of their deal with the Canadians included in TTIP. Part of that calls for governments to have the right to regulate and set up a permanent tribunal to settle disputes. R CALF CEO Bill Bullard says that idea is very disturbing and should not be a part of any U.S. trade deal.
He says it’s more important to build up supply chains in each country negotiating a trade agreement rather than adhering to a one world governing body.
Bullard says U.S. trade negotiators need to focus more on the level of imports, reduce any trade deficits and get away from relying on just increasing exports.
Bullard says U.S. trade policy has been going the wrong direction for 20 years and he’s hoping that ship can be righted with a proper and well thought out TTIP trade agreement.
