Thursday, Cargill officials reported an explosion at a small stand alone building that’s part of their Dodge City, Kansas beef processing complex. That led them to suspend operations Thursday at the plant. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says that raises more market concerns following a fire that shutdown production at the Tyson Holcomb plant in August.
He says cattle producers could end up hurting due to Cargill’s production shutdown.
Bullard says the USDA has already begun looking into what happened at the Holcomb plant and the market effects. He says now they need to add this facility to their investigation.
The Holcomb plant fire reduced the amount of cattle able to be processed by around 5 percent and that sent cattle prices lower.
