Several high plains states are moving to reinstate Country of Origin Labeling at the state level. The most recent is in Montana where legislation calls for country of origin labeling for both beef and pork. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says without a national labeling law in place, some states are taking the initiative and putting in their own.

He says R-CALF will be taking another run at attempting to get COOL reinstated at the national level.

Bullard says without COOL, consumers are being mislead as beef is imported and then co-mingled and then put in a box where it’s labeled as U.S. meat.

Bullard says poll after poll shows consumers want to know where their meat comes from but have been stopped by the powerful meat packer lobby which has fought COOL at every turn and eventually won when it was rescinded.
