Thursday, Montana Senator Jon Tester introduced a resolution supporting the reinstatement of Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard is pleased with that introduction and expects that to lead to Senate legislation to follow through with that.

He says since Mandatory COOL was repealed in 2015 there have been problems with cattle imports from other countries undercutting U.S. product. Bullard says there’s also been an effort to put in a voluntary program which wouldn’t work.

Bullard says the best way to get Mandatory COOL back in force and avoid any trade retaliation from foreign countries is to get it installed in the USMCA trade agreement.

Bullard says R-CALF members are working with Senator Tester and other federal lawmakers to attempt to get Mandatory COOL installed in the USMCA trade pact.
