Quiet Sunday in Pierre

Quiet Sunday in Pierre

All was quiet mid Sunday morning at the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre.

A protest scheduled for 12 p.m. today has not yet assembled but security teams were at the ready.

State Troopers stepped up security Saturday and were augmented by National Guards in military Humvees by mid-day.

The nearby Governor’s Mansion showed no visible signs of additional security; the overall posture suggests the Governor is not at the Pierre residence today. A $400,000 security fence now surrounds the Mansion, it’s gates closed and ‘private area’ signs on the lawn.

While the additional security is noticeable, it stands in stark contrast to the heavily armed response to a peaceful protest last May.

Worshipers at a neighboring church across the street from the State Capitol disappeared quickly leaving only the security teems at the Capitol.
