There is a national push to make school lunch free to every student. Nebraska Department of Education Nutrition Services Director, Sharon Davis says there is something very similar now called the Community Eligibility Provision that individual districts can apply for.

Davis says a number of schools are now offering a summer food program. All districts have to meet certain standards to be eligible. She says there are strict guidelines in place regarding who can participate to avoid people from walking in off the street expecting a meal.

There are two districts in Nebraska that currently participate and serve two meals a day, breakfast and lunch.
