Protecting Your Cow-calf Herd During Storm

Protecting Your Cow-calf Herd During Storm

A pending storm with rain and snow is forecast for the region on Tuesday, which may present problems for cow-calf producers.  Adele Harty, a S-D-S-U cow calf extension specialist says prior to the storm, farmers and ranchers need to have their cows fully fed, and to provide protection for those cows.

Harty says baled straw, hay or cornstalks stacked as a wall will also provide protection for the cows and their calves.  She says ranchers need to use caution when having cows inside a barn structure.

The cow-calf specialist suggests only house those cows inside the barn that are likely to give birth during the storm and leave the other cows outside.
