Property Tax Relief Priority in Unicameral for Coalition

Property tax relief is a priority issue in the 2018 Unicameral for the Nebraskans United Coalition, a group representing farm groups and school organizations. State Farmers Union President John Hansen is a member of the coalition. He says the state’s farmers and ranchers are already facing a depressed ag economy and desperately need that tax relief.

He says the three sources of state revenue including property, income and sales taxes are unbalanced, and a shift in those tax levels is badly needed.

Hansen says that means sales and income taxes need to come up to match the revenue being sought from property taxes.

Hansen says the Nebraskans United Coalition is working for legislation to address the problem, as well as seeking a legal challenge and a citizen’s initiative.
