Progress is being made to require lab grown protein be labeled as an alternative protein instead of as meat. Memphis Meats, maker of the alternative protein, and the North American Meat Institute wrote to the Administration asking that their product be labeled as cell cultured meat rather than clean meat. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner says that’s a step in the right direction.
His group agrees with Memphis Meats and NAMI that jurisdiction over meat labeling should be handled by USDA and FDA, as well as Congress.
Graner says USCA doesn’t oppose the production of lab grown product, just the labeling of it as meat. He says there’s still many questions to be answered.
Graner says his group will continue to support accurate and truthful labeling on all U.S. beef products.
