Producers Should Consider Margin Protection Program

Dairy producers have until November 20 to sign up for the Margin Protection Safety Net program at their local Farm Service Agency office. Almost half of the nation’s dairy producers have already signed up. Minnesota Milk Producer’s Association Executive Director Bob Lefebvre says dairy producers should at least consider the MPP or any other possible risk management program.
Lefebvre says it’s also a good idea to work with your financial advisor to see what’s best for your operation.
He says the margin protection program is different from what was available in the past and mainly it’s in place should a disaster occur.
The margin protection program provides financial help to dairy producers when the margin, the difference between feed costs and the price of milk falls below the coverage level selected by the applicant.
