Farmers have until the end of the month to verify their current base acres, yields and planting history with the Farm Service Agency. South Dakota Corn Grower’s President Keith Alverson says it’s important farmers report that because it will affect their sign up under the new farm bill.
Alverson says it’s also critical farmers fully understand the differences between the new farm bill risk management programs and that once they sign up they’re in it for the life of the farm bill until 2018.
Farmers should have already received a letter from USDA with a report of their base acres and yields for the past several years. The figures are used to calculate eligibility and payment for crop risk management programs. IF the information was correct the they don’t have to report to FSA.
