Producers Must Consider Options In Dealing With Heavy Hail Damage

Producers Must Consider Options In Dealing With Heavy Hail Damage

Last week a heavy hail storm swept through Plymouth County in Northwest Iowa ripping up corn and soybeans. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Joel DeJong says the path it cut went from Lemars North to Correctionville and left the heaviest damage he’s seen in several years.

He says each producer needs to evaluate what his or her next step should be and what options to consider. DeJong recommends checking with your crop insurance agent first.

DeJong says some farmers may want to consider putting in cover crops but as far as any replant goes, herbicide restrictions need to be looked at before going forward as well as any crop insurance regulations that must be met.

DeJong says producers can also talk to their local Farm Service Agency office to see which programs if any are available for possible assistance.
