The weather is turning significantly colder this week in the region, which will stress livestock and dairy herds. SDSU Extension Dairy Field Specialist Tracey Erickson says dairy producers need to be ready for those winter conditions and barn and facility maintenance are an important part of that.
She advises producers to double check their water sources and make sure there’s wind breaks for animals that are outside.
Erickson also says dairy producers need to be sure generators are operating properly and that they have enough fuel on hand. Plus, dairymen need a plan in place to get milk transported in the event of heavy snows or a blizzard.
Erickson also recommends utilizing calf coats on newborn dairy calves until they are weaned.
