President Donald Trump’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget proposal calls for a 15 percent cut to USDA programs, including $26 billion in crop insurance. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says farmers who’ve been under intense financial pressure can’t afford that.
He says the President claims to be supporting farmers but his budget plan doesn’t represent that.
Wertish says Trump’s budget has no chance of passing in Congress.
The President’s budget also cuts $9 billion to voluntary conservation programs and $8 billion in programs that help ranchers recover grazing lands hurt by drought. It also eliminates the Rural Energy for America and Rural Economic Development programs.
