Monday, President Donald Trump unveiled his long-awaited $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan. It includes $50 billion for rural infrastructure, which will mainly be in the form of state block grants. Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek says it’s a good starting point.
He’s pleased the President singled out the infrastructure needs of rural America and that his plan calls for investment from the federal government, in addition to states and cities.
Steenhoek says it’s also positive the President recognizes the need for infrastructure updates in the U.S. and is proposing a comprehensive package, as agriculture is reliant on all forms of transportation.
Steenhoek says the Soy Transportation Coalition proposes raising the federal gas and diesel fuel tax 10-cents and indexing it to inflation to help pay for the infrastructure upgrade.
