Over the weekend, President Obama attended the Summit of the America’s in Panama and met with Cuban President Raul Castro. The meeting was another link in establishing more normal trade relations between the island country and the U.S.
South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke sees that meeting as a positive encounter, and he says the U.S. needs to continue working on humanitarian efforts in establishing better trade relations with Cuba.
Sombke says trade between Cuba and the U.S. could prove to be very lucrative for both countries and would be especially beneficial for South Dakota’s farmers and ranchers.
Sombke says it’s also important to solidify trade relations with Cuba, because that country is interested in trading with other countries and will continue in that direction despite what the U.S. does.
