Northwestern Energy is looking at a major upgrade of their electric transmission facilities in and near Yankton.

One project is a large substation planned near their existing power plant northeast of Yankton on Whiting Drive.

Northwestern Manager Brad Wenande (wha-nan-dee) appeared before the Yankton City Commission to ask for approval of a conditional use permit…

Wenande said the site is being planned to blend in with the surroundings and avoid nuisances with neighbors…

Wenande says the new, twenty two million dollar substation will expand their power capacity in the area…

After hearing concerns of neighbors to the site, the city commission approved the permit on a nine to zero vote.

Wenande says they hope to begin construction later this year.
