U.S.A. Poultry and Egg Export Council officials are working in southeast Asia to open markets for U.S. poultry and eggs. Council President Jim Sumner has been in South Korea and China working out the details to allow U.S. exports into those countries, which closed their markets to U.S. turkey after the bird flu outbreak in 2015.
He says following talks in China, USAPEEC will be focusing on getting market access for U.S. turkeys in the Korean market.
Sumner says it takes hard work from the entire agricultural industry to achieve export market access. He says turkey producers in Minnesota, egg growers in Iowa and poultry producers in South Dakota have all helped in those efforts.
South Korea is opening its market to U.S. eggs for the first time, following the recent bird flu outbreak. It is the worst in the nation’s history as 30 million birds have been culled so far.
